Reading Strategies

Some of you have asked me to further explain our reading strategies that we use within the classroom.
Owl eyes: use your eyes to look at the picture clues.
Lips the fish: get your lips ready to say the first sound of the word (this can help to avoid guessing)
Stretchy the snake: stretch the word out sound by sound (we use our arms and tap for each sound)
Flippy the dolphin: flip the vowel sound and try the long sound or short sound to see what makes sense.
Chunky monkey: look for chunks/blends within the word you are sounding out. (Vowel patterns-when 2 vowels go walking the first one does the talking- blends (2 letters that together make 1 sound) we refer to jolly phonics phase 3 for this!
Skippy the frog: skip the word you don't know and read until the period and then hop back to figure it out.
Tryin lion: keep trying different words to see what makes the most sense. If it doesn't try again!! And never give up!!
