☘☘☘

Today has been a blast! Even though the naughty leprechaun got through our traps and completely destroyed our room--he did leave a magic potion snack which has resulted in great behavior! We also got to make leprechaun punch as a class and leprechaun puppets! We didn't even get to all of the fun things, so we will continue next week!!! Thanks for all of your donations to make this day so fun!

February-March Update

I wanted to send out some updates of what we have been doing in our classroom!

Reading: We have worked on the following skills lately:
  • summarizing
  • analyzing characters
  • making connections
  • Inferences
  • predictions
Great things to talk about while reading every night to work on comprehension!

Reading Strategies:
  • Skippy the frog (skip the word then hop back to it)
  • Tryin' Lion (keep trying word to see what makes sense)
  • Flippy the Dolphin (flip the vowel sound to the long sound)
Word Work:
  • Sight words (important to know these without sounding them out)
  • Chunks in words that make one sound
  • Silent E (giving the other vowel all of its power to say its name)
  • Vowel buddies (when two vowels go walking the first one does the talking)
  • Jolly phonics phase 3 on youtube
End of the year goal for kindergarten: Level D

Writing:
  • We've moved on from informational writing to "how to books"
  • We are currently making a how to book on their chosen topic to share with the class.
Top 5 things we work on:
  1. Capital letter for the first letter, lowercase for the rest.
  2. Spaces between words (finger spaces or we use "space men")
  3. Sight words spelled correctly in writing (they are able to use the word wall)
  4. A sentence is ONE idea.
  5. Punctuation at the end.
Math:
  • Adding and subtracting (we are going up to 10 currently)
  • COUNTING TO 100
  • Identifying numbers up to 70
  • Identifying shapes (2d and 3d-just started 3d)
  • Greater than/Less than
  • teen numbers
Behavior:
We will be TRYING ClassDojo in our classroom. For those of you who are not familiar with it, kids will get points added or subtracted throughout the day depending on their behavior. There is a free app that goes with it so you can keep track of your child and see specifically what is going on. There will be a reasoning attached to every added or subtracted point. A note will be sent home tonight with more details. Just be understanding that sometimes we have technical difficulties and will have to skip it for a day, and sometimes there will be a substitute in here who will not be using it. As students get points added they can clip their name up on the chart, as they get points subtracted they can clip down. Please continue to check their behavior calendar at night. This also goes along with our bucket filler idea too.
